- Students will spend a great deal of time selecting their own books to read this year. They will have access to my classroom library as well as the school library, and will use book review blogs to choose reading material.
- The emphasis will be on learning to think about what they read. Each day, in class, students will write a letter to me discussing what they are reading. This will be a big part of their grade.
- We will also be reading one to two novels a month together as a class. We will be practicing strategies for thinking about what we are reading. During Reading time we will learn skills that help us think about reading: connecting, visualizing, questioning, inferring, determining importance, and synthesizing. Students will apply these lessons to their own reading and reflect their progress in their daily writings.
- Students are expected to read for 30 minutes a night and homework will consist of making notes about their personal reading at home.
Goal for the year: 30 books read! (books in class will count toward goal)
